Is anyone really well versed in Redstone constructions?

My brother and I have been able to create a simple railway system, single hidden bookcase door, lava trap, incinerator and smelting works. But we'd like to try more advanced things like a portcullis or elevator and were wondering if anyone had any tips or advice for it is really confusing to us.

We watched a few Youtube clips, but some of the folks are so dang fast or don't explain all the minutiae, which we need unfortunately.

We were able to make a hidden door out 3 2X2 sticky piston walls. Though the housing for it had to be huge. Trying smaller, sleeker designs. It's tricky.
